ENVIRONMENT
Ndakaini Dam is the largest water reservoir of three dams located in the Aberdare region. In efforts to maintain rain water supply to the dams, UAP, Ndakaini
Environmental Association (NDEKA), Nairobi Water and partners have planted over 100,000 of the targeted 250,000 indigenous trees for 8 years around the Ndakaini Dam.
UAP Old Mutual Foundation reinforced this initiative to fulfil its environmental conservation promise by planting approximately 10,000 indigenous trees on Saturday,
16 April 2016.
Our vision is to;
- To conserve the rainwater catchment area of the Ndakaini Dam, which supplies over 80% of the water consumed by Nairobi and its environs.
- To plant 250,000 tree seedlings around the Dam, extending to the Mau region and the Aberdare ranges by the year 2025.
- To foster a sense of responsibility to the environment amongst partners, staff and community through environmental conservation initiatives.
The tree planting initiative has direct positive impact on the community such as;
- Job Creation: Local communities provide labour in addition to the volunteerism from staff and partners
- Direct financial benefits: All trees are purchased from the local community’s seedling nurseries
- Financial literacy: Free classes are offered by UAP Old Mutual Financial Advisors. These sessions empower the community with the ability to understand their
personal financial situation to enable them make effective decisions for current and future life.
These were distributed in 5 schools namely;
- Kibos School for the Blind
- Korara Primary Bomet
- Central Primary School
- St. Lucy Meru School
- Likoni School for the Blind
