As an inaugural project, the Foundation undertook an initiative to renovate the Kenyatta National Hospital’s (KNH) Accident and Emergency wing.
The Kenyatta National Hospital was founded in 1901 and is Kenya’s biggest public hospital; and the biggest referral hospital in East& Central Africa. It is against this background the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Wing refurbishment became a compelling option for the Foundation’s involvement in the hospital.
This project began following the private-public partnership agreement between the Old Mutual Kenya Foundation and the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in May 2015; that saw the Foundation commit Kes 18.7 Million ( approx. $183,000) for the project.
After several months of the associated works, the project realised: the overhaul of the A&E floor, organization of the health information unit to enhance patient management efficiency through creation of 10 counters, expansion of the A&E resuscitation room, renovation of the nurses’ rest area, expansion of 4 consultation rooms to improve patient privacy, expansion of doors to create space for stretchers, expansion of resuscitation rooms to create adequate room for emergency response, installation of new signage to improve flow of patients and creation of a new pharmacy cash office, Ultrasound room and Treatment room.
The wing was unveiled on 2 February 2016 in presence of Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr Cleopa Mailu, as well as the Acting Director of Medical Services Dr. Jackson Kioko.
